Insurance fraud “crash for cash”

by Josef Kafka

A BBC news report last month raised awareness of the rise in the number of “crash for cash” cases, or induced accidents, in which gangs cause accidents on purpose and then make claims for whiplash compensation, ultimately making insurance premiums higher for everyone.

Now one of Britain’s largest motoring insurers has said numbers of these fraudsters has this summer gone up by more than 50% on last year’s tally. The firm is calling for stricter sentencing on these cases, after experiencing over 6,000 motoring insurance claims for injuries related to organised, fraudulent activity.

It has put the total value of these claims at over £10m.

As an example, footage has been released of a typical “cash for crash” scenario, shot thanks to a dashboard camera, in which a totally blameless motorist was unable to avoid the fraudsters, and smashed into them.

Now a number of private investigators, and the police, are working to raise awareness of the issue and to inform and insist those who have experienced fraud-related problems.

It’s worth understanding the role private detectives can play in exposing and proving fraud, and appreciating that, in most cases, you are far likelier to catch the fraudsters if you involve investigators in the earlier stages of a situation of suspected fraud.

Given that this kind of surveillance can be very time-consuming and require a high level of expertise and qualified staff, it’s probably not something you’d want to take on yourself. Equally, you only need to get one step wrong and the whole operation is rendered worthless.

With 7 days a week surveillance, using the latest equipment and tracking methods, private detectives can save you money long-term and help with a wide range of investigations for all types of fraud, not just those related to road traffic accidents.

Insurance fraud in particular is something that costs the British economy many millions of pounds annually and makes life more expensive for everyone. Don’t let your business fall prey to a fraudster or insurance scam – use private investigators to identify the culprits, and prove their blame, promptly, effectively and efficiently.
